Zones

  • During the production of The Giver, the director had wanted the play to be split into three different "zones" with each zone being a certain place in the city.

  • The stage right zone being the main characters (Jonas) home and his dining room. There were two 4X8 flats, near the stage right edge of the stage, which marked the beginning of the zone, the zone extended out about 16 feet towards center stage from the edge of the stage.

  • The center stage zone was used as the main hub for the town, as well as the house where all scenes with the giver in them. The zone spanned about 32 feet from the edge of the stage right zone to the end of the of the stage left zone.

  • The stage left zone was used as all the scenes which took place outside any buildings and where Jonas would find and talk with his friends as well as start seeing color. It was the same setup, just mirrored as the stage right zone.

  • Finally, there was a small section of platforms upstage from everything else, hidden behind the scrim curtain. This section was only lit up using Colorsource Par LED's. This section was used for flashbacks, some memories, as well as introducing the giver.

Color

  • Color took an extremely important role in this play. Since the play revolves around Jonas receiving all the things people have outgrown, such as memories and color, the play starts out with everything being plain and white, with more and more color being introduced as the play goes on. For all the zones used, as well as the set pieces, white was used to give the uniform 1984 look. Once Jonas started to see colors, things began to change, The books used in the givers library slowly had more color in them, and during one scene where Jonas sees his friends bright red hair for the first time, we used one of the wash lights with a deep red gel to light up the actors hair.

Specials

  • During the show, multiple specials were used. there was a light which was placed and operated to appear as if a old projector was running towards the audience, There were two snow machines that were used to snow on Jonas at the end of the play, and at the end of the play, there was a scene which required a spotlight to be used at the front of house position operated by me.

  • The projector light was a smaller version of a ETC Source 4, that was hung on top of the flown set wall. The light would be turned up to about 20% and at random, given full power and back down, to give the illusion of a projection.

  • The snow machines were used towards the end of the play, Jonas escapes the clutches of the dystopian city and runs away to find a different life. He travels far enough so that he finds snow which was when the machines were turned on.

  • Also at the end of the play, the entire stage goes dark and there is only light on Jonas when he is on his bike. He does however, get off the bike and so we had a spotlight set up right behind the light board where I would operate the light and follow Jonas until he got off the bike.
